José Saldanha Matos is the new President of the Portuguese Water Partnership (PWP)

Professor José Saldanha Matos, in representation of Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), a leading Portuguese School of Engineering,  has been elected President of the Board of Directors of the Portuguese Water Partnership for the 2020-2022 cycle. The election took place this June 17th, at PWP’s General Member Assembly, which took place via videoconference, with a total of 32 attendees.

The newly elected members of PWP’s governing bodies comprise several entities already represented in the previous mandate. As novelties we have the integration of IST, TPF – a leading engineering firm, APESB – the Association of Sanitation and Environmental Engineering Professionals, and APREN – the Association of Renewable Energy Operators, in the new Board of Directors.

Thus, the representation of APA – the Environmental Agency, ERSAR – the Water and Waste Services Regulation Authority, LNEC – the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering, EFACEC – a leading contractor and system installation firm, and AEPSA – the Association of Private Operators in the Environmental Sector, is maintained in our Board of Directors.

The General Assembly will henceforth be chaired by AdP – Águas de Portugal, together with APRH  – The Water Resource Association, and Aquapor – The leading Portuguese private water service operator. The Audit Committee will remain with Águas do Porto in  its presidency and Engidro – a reference engineering advisory firm, as vice-president.

Recognizing the increased challenges that will underscore the next three years, the winning list manifesto proposes building upon and leveraging the successful work that was developed by the previous Board of Directors, reinforcing the role of PWP’s Strategic Council, and highlights the following purposes:

  • Increasing the visibility, notoriety and reputation of the Portuguese water sector in the international arena;
  • Growing the degree of internationalization of Portuguese companies in the sector: diversifying markets, identifying new opportunities and partnerships;
  • Consolidating the Portuguese water network of firms and professionals actively engaged in overseas markets;
  • Enhancing the international competitiveness of the Portuguese water cluster;
  • Sharing knowledge between partners and supporting innovation in the sector.

Regarding the work carried out by the outgoing Board of Directors, led by Eng. Alexandra Cunha Serra, as CEO of Águas de Portugal Internacional, a vote of praise and appreciation was unanimously approved by all members present at this General Assembly.
